Keeping Life Organized as a New Mom

Here’s the thing: when you have a baby, there are a lot of things that change in your lifestyle no matter who you are. You’re crazy busy as you adjust to having a new little person in your life who requires constant care and attention. You’re sleep deprived and learning how to cope with doing normal things – like laundry – when all you want to do is spend time with your new little addition. But slowly, you adapt. You learn to create a new normal – and to create a schedule that actually lets you get things done.

You see, life with a baby is amazing. But when I’m home and RJ is awake, he is my number one priority. Spending time with him and giving him our full attention isn’t just a necessity at this stage in his life: it’s something that Ricky and I want to do. So now, I do everything I possibly can to maximize my productivity when he’s sleeping so that we can have family time when he’s awake.

I try to prepare everything I need for the next day at night. After RJ’s last meal of the day, he’s pretty zonked out and ready to go right to bed. So once I get him snuggled up and snoozing, I do everything that I can to make the next morning go as smoothly as possible. I get the Keurig stocked with water, coffee and a mug. I wash and sanitize all of his bottles and dishes and get them ready to be mixed up in the morning. I make sure his diaper bag is stocked if we’re planning on leaving the house so that I don’t have to run around the next day to pull everything together. I lay out an outfit for me and an outfit for him to wear. Then I run through my house to make sure things are relatively picked up, that the kitchen is clean and that any dirty laundry is either in a hamper or in the laundry room. It sounds neurotic, but doing these things while he’s asleep is way easier than trying to hurry my way through them when he’s awake!

I keep our family calendar in one location. I used to keep multiple calendars – one in my purse, one in my office and one at home – which made life confusing. Things wouldn’t always get transferred over from one calendar to the other. Now I keep one calendar that also houses my to-do list for the week. It’s super convenient to have these things in the same spot because I’m more able to stay on top of things – and it keeps me more productive than having four different lists of things to get done throughout my house.

I get up early in the morning to start my day on a productive note. Once RJ’s up for the morning, my focus is him. So if I want to get things done – like prepare his breakfast, do a load of laundry and go through my email – I have to be up while it’s still dark out. At first I thought I was a little nuts for getting up so early when I’m already sleep deprived as a new mom. But since I’m getting more things done before the bean wakes up, I don’t have as many things to take care of at night when he goes to bed. This means I have more time to spend with the hubby and that I can actually go to bed a little earlier than I otherwise would. Both of these things are definitely wins for this mama!
